Middle School, Inc.: A Business Meeting

It’s easy to forget what it was like to be a middle schooler.  Let’s be honest, who found enjoyment in going through the hardships of transitioning into a teenager?  One thing most middle schoolers take a liking to is being treated as mature, young-adults.

Build off this notion by treating your apprentices just like you would a colleague in your workplace.  Giving students responsibility and asking them to make mature decisions will elicit the adult-like behavior you are seeking.  For your opening ritual, try holding a business meeting at the start of every session. By the end of the apprenticeship, students should be able to call their own meeting, hold a vote, and make critical business decisions without your help!

Recommended for apprenticeships emulating the business world or any type of project management.

Potential sectors: Architecture & Design, Business & Finance, Law & Government, Media & Journalism, and STEM
