Led by Texas Citizen Teachers from the SHW Group Emily Potts, Alison Binford, and Ed Napier, Bedichek students from the Can-struction apprenticeship WOW!ed hundreds of visitors at the Barton Creek Mall as they displayed their masterpieces made solely out of donated cans! Working in teams of three, the “Can”Struction apprentices built a giant cornucopia, milk carton, and slice of cherry pie. Each structure represents the abundant harvest of the Thanksgiving season. Not only did students demonstrate their mastery of design concepts, but they learned the importance of spacing and foundation as they manipulated the nearly 1,624 cans to create their final products. The cans were donated to the Capital Area Food Bank in Austin.
Over the course of the semester, Texas Citizen Teacher Lonny Stern from Skill Point Alliance has been turning Kealing apprentices into programmers, engineers and researchers to design robots to navigate around obstacles. The future engineers and scientists are also researching how biomedical engineering can improve emergency room procedures! Their findings will be revealed at the STEM WOW! on Thursday, December 9th.
